The silicon name game is about getting attention. Attention is not affection. Attention is just the beginning not the end. If you want affection you have to deliver and if you want that affection to last then you have to deliver excellence. Once you get attention then what? Its what you can deliver that counts. A tech center needs five kinds of resources to work, livability, infrastructure, an environment of excellence, a courageous community of people who get it and go for it, but the most important ingredient is access to capital. If you have affordable infrastructure and a community of excellence then you can call yourself silicon “anything”. People will come if there is talent and excellence there and they will stay if those resources are there. Its not the name that made silicon valley, ‘silicon valley’. Its the tradition of excellence and innovation by the people who live and work there that did that. It’s kinda like being pretty. Being pretty only gets you the interview. Substance is what ‘s attractive. Excellence is what matters. Beauty fades, names change and only substance remains.
